London is number one for wages

The English capital is number one alongside two Scottish cities, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, in the largely southern dominated list of top 10 cities by average wage

London topped the list with average with average wages of £39,232, followed by Cambridge with £35,321 and Edinburgh with £34,145.

The list, compiled by research from the job listing site Adzuna from 1.2 million jobs hosted on its site compared average wages across the UK, providing both a list 10 cities with the highest average age and the 10 cities with the lowest.

Aberdeen made it into the top 10 at seven, with average wages of £32,280.

The research also analysed average wages by sector, which found roles in accounting and finance at six, with average wages of £36,554. IT roles were the best paid with an average salary of £47,512 followed by lawyers at £40,190.

In March, research suggested that UK families face the worst decade for wage growth since the Napoleonic wars, with real average earnings only set to return to their pre-crisis peak in 2022.
