David Gauke appointed lord chancellor in reshuffle

The former work and pensions secretary has been tasked with leading the Justice Department

A trained solicitor, he was promoted to chief Treasury secretary in prime minister Theresa May’s first reshuffle last July 2016. Gauke, who in his former role focused on tax policy, was a leading figure in the government’s Making Tax Digital plans.

Former KPMG partner and chartered accountant Karen Bradley has been appointed secretary of state for Northern Ireland. The culture secretary is to take over from James Brokenshire, who has stepped down due to health reasons.

ICAEW member Justine Greening resigned from her position as education secretary after reportedly turning down a move to Work and Pensions.

Fellow chartered accountant Alok Sharma, the MP for Reading West, has been appointed employment minister.

Greg Clark has retained his position as business secretary while Jeremy Hunt will continue lead the NHS, now with an expanded brief to include social care. According to various reports, Hunt refused the business secretary job.
