He takes over from Tom Martin and will join the board on 12 March.
Welcoming Rees’ appointment, Financial Reporting Council CEO Stephen Hadrill said: “Gareth brings extensive regulatory and disciplinary experience in both prosecution and defence, and possesses an exceptional understanding of the workings of our Accounting and Actuarial Discipline Board.
“His experience will be an enormous asset and will significantly help expedite disciplinary cases in a proportionate ad timely manner.”
Rees is familiar with AADB workings as he has been involved in two current investigations into audit misconduct.
He has also advised both on Financial Services Authority settlements concerning market abuse and insider dealing and on FSA powers on search and procedure.
The AADB is the independent investigative and disciplinary body for accountants and actuaries in the UK.
