A round-up of this week's appointments, promotions, board moves and resignations


Marks & Spencer CFO, Helen Weir, announced that she is resigning from the company.

Weir, who is a member of the chartered institute of management accountants, joined the group in 2015 and was previously group finance director of the John Lewis Partnership and Kingfisher plc. She also worked at Lloyds Banking Group between 2004 and 2011.

The company is searching for her replacement and she will stay on in the role until one is found.

Crowe Clark Whitehill

Mark Anderson has been appointed as managing partner of the audit, tax and advisory firm’s Kent office, Mitesh Patelia has been appointed corporate finance partner, and Kerry Brown and Andrew Thomas have been appointed partners in the firm’s non-profits team.

Anderson, a chartered accountant and member of ICAEW, has over 20 years’ experience in the industry and will succeed Keith Newman. A corporate audit and business advisory strategist, Anderson joined the firm in 1988 when its Maidstone office was opened.

Becoming partner in 2000, Anderson was said to have made a significant contribution to Crowe Clark Whitehills’s growth in the region following the opening of its Tunbridge Wells office.

Patelia, also a chartered accountant and member of ICAEW, has 13 years’ experience and has been with Crowe since 2008.

In addition to supporting the firm’s entrepreneurial and growth clients from within the Transaction Support and Corporate Finance team, Patelia helped set up the firm’s India desk. Prior to joining Crowe, he was an audit supervisor at Shipleys.

Brown, a chartered accountant and member of ICAEW, initially joined the firm in 1989 as a trainee. She has worked in the award-winning non-profits team.

Thomas has nearly 20 years’ experience and joined Crowe in 2011, working in the non-profits team. Prior to his appointment, Thomas was an audit manager for UHY Hacker Young and senior audit manager for Armida.


Jon Gilpin has been appointed as audit partner of the mid-tier firm’s Birmingham office, effective immediately.

Gilpin, a chartered accountant and ICAEW member, specialises in the provision of audit to UK and internationally focused businesses. Prior to his appointment, Gilpin was a director at Big Four firm PwC, where he spent 20 years.


Martin Clapson has been voted as global chairman of association of independent accountancy and business advisory firms, the IAPA. 

Clapson, a chartered accountant and ICAEW member, is currently Price Bailey’s managing director. He was unanimously voted as IAPA’s global chairman at the IAPA 2017 International AGM. He previously had a three-year tenure as European Chairman and spent 18 months as global vice chairman. Earlier this year, he was appointed acting global chairman.

JKX Oil & Gas

Ben Fraser has been appointed chief financial officer of the exploration and production company, effective November 20.

Fraser, a chartered accountant and member of ICAEW, has over 20 years’ experience. Prior to his appointment, he was group CFO and company secretary for Equus Petroleum for three years. He has held positions in numerous companies, including Deloitte, HSBC, NM Rothschild, Kazakhmys PLC and KazMunaiGasi Exploration Production.

BHP Billiton

The mining conglomerate has recruited 20 apprentices, graduates and placement students to work in its five departments in Sheffield, Leeds, Cleckheaton, Chesterfield and York.

Price Bailey

Karl Gessner has been appointed director in the corporate team of the chartered accountancy firm’s Norwich office.

Gessner, a chartered accountant, was previously worked at Deloitte for 18 years at multiple offices around the world, including his native South Africa, Latvia, Ukraine and Australia.

Price Bailey's managing director, Martin Clapson, was also voted as global chairman of IAPA.
