The movie, starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick and JK Simmons, beat The Girl on the Train and Kevin Hart: What Now to the number one spot in the box office on its opening weekend in October 2016, and took in a total of $155m (£121.3m).
According to the Motion Picture Association of America, the Accountant was the most popular rental, followed by other popular movies like Moana, Beauty and the Beast and Wonder Women.
The crime drama was the prime choice for digital rentals as well.
Affleck plays an accountant who uses his small-town accountancy office as a front for his work balancing the books for dangerous criminal organisations.
As the Treasury Department begins to pursue him for his involvement with criminal enterprises, he takes on a legitimate client before both of them become targets in an action-packed plot.
In June last year, news blog Deadline revealed that Warner Bros. was in talks with Affleck, screenwriter Bill Dubuque and director Gavin O’Connor about a second movie.
