Movers and shakers

A round-up of this week's appointments, promotions, board moves and resignations

Grant Thornton

Wendy Russell has been appointed as audit partner in the Milton Keynes office of the UK’s sixth-largest firm and Nicola Sartori as head of mergers and acquisitions in the retail and consumer brands team.

Russell, a chartered accountant and fellow of ICAEW has more than 17 years’ experience and previously spent more than 16 years at Big Four firm PwC where she was a director.

Sartori, a chartered accountant and ICAEW fellow, has been appointed in the firm’s London office. She has more than 16 years’ experience advising on high-profile transactions and was previously head of M&A retail and consumer and corporate finance director at BDO UK, also spending almost two years on secondment as group finance director at Aurora Fashions.

International Airlines Group (IAG)

Steve Gunning has been appointed as CFO of the world’s sixth-largest airline group and will succeed Enrique Dupuy de Lôme.

Gunning, ACA, is currently CFO at British Airways (BA), of which IAG is the holding company. He joined BA in 1998 as finance director and head of internal controls, becoming a managing director of BA World Cargo in 2007. He became chief executive of IAG Cargo in 2011. In 2016 he was appointed as BA CFO and has been acting director of IAG Global Business Services since 2017, a position he will take on permanently. Gunning spent five years at Big Four firm PwC and is a non-executive director at transport operator FirstGroup.

International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants

Gaylen Hansen has been appointed as chair of the Consultative Advisory Group, the independent body that provides strategic and technical advice to IESBA, effective 1 June.

Hansen, CPA, has served on the IESBA CAG since 2010 as a representative of the US National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), of which he has been on the board of directors for a decade and as chair between 2012 and 2013. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs’ Auditing Standard Board and in the past was a member of its Professional Ethics Executive Committee. He also previously served on the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board’s Standing Advisory Group. He was formerly an audit partner and director of quality assurance at professional services firm EKS&H (now part of Plante Moran).

Silence Therapeutics

Rob Quinn has been appointed as CFO of the RNA therapeutic solutions research and development company, effective immediately, but will not be appointed to the board of directors.

Quinn, ACA, has been interim chief officer since January 2019 and prior to this spent two years as head of financial planning and analysis at Silence Therapeutics. Previously, he was area finance director for Africa and developing countries for GSK, and has a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Manchester.

eve Sleep

Tim Parfitt has been appointed as CFO of the bed producer, effective 17 June and will succeed Abid Ismail, who resigned on 12 March and departs 31 May.

Parfitt has more than a decade’s experience as a CFO, having most recently held the role at furniture retailer Loaf, where he spent more than 5 years. His previous roles include various finance director and senior finance function roles across various industries and sectors. He qualified as a chartered management accountant in 1995.
