Business secretary

UK business has a new minister in the shape of Norman Lamb, Lib Dem MP for North Norfolk.

He was promoted from the back benches to replace Ed Davey in today’s cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of Chris Huhne as Secretary of State for Energy. Davey takes on Huhne’s old job.

Huhne faces charges of perverting the course of justice alongside his former wife, Vicky Price, over allegations that she accepted penalty points for a speeding charge so that he would not lose his driving licence. Both are due to appear in court on 16 February.

Lamb is a solicitor by training and an expert in employment law. He was elected to parliament in 2001 and has served on the Treasury select committee.

In 2005, he was appointed shadow minister for trade and industry and in 2006 he served as chief of staff to Lib Dem leader Menzies Campbell.

Since the coalition came into power he has served as chief parliamentary and political adviser to deputy prime minister Nick Clegg.
