EY adds to legal practice

Big Four firm EY has bolstered its legal team with a key new hire who is joining the firm to spearhead the firm’s legal risk practice

Matthew Whalley, the head of legal risk at Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP), will be joining EY in January 2016.

A leading voice on legal risk, Whalley’s career spans a decade and his appointment is in line with the EY’s ambitions to double its legal services team in the UK by the end of 2016.

“I am thrilled to be joining EY at such an exciting time in its growth,” Whalley said.

“Since the crisis, financial services firms have been under increased scrutiny to map and manage their risk, so I am delighted to be joining a firm which is building its legal service offerings in such a relevant area to support its clients.”

He was joined by Matthew Kellett, EY’s financial services law leader in the UK, who said he was “delighted” to welcome Whalley to the team.

Kellett said, “At a time when the regulatory lens is so keenly focused on how financial services firms are managing their risk, Matthew’s expertise will be extremely welcome to our financial services clients.

“Systematic assessment and mitigation of legal risk is a relatively new area and combines EY’s legal ambitions with its proven expertise in the risk assessment and mitigation arenas.”
